Rainbow Cake In a Jar

(Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love better living through chemistry.)

I tend to be somewhat ADHD when it comes to my internet usage.  This is why I'm such a failure at Twitter.  There's far too much to see and do, and I'm all "Oooh, shiny!" whenever I'm on there, and at the rate I'm going, it'll be millenia before I reach the end of the internet.

All this is to explain how I happened to find a recipe for rainbow cake in a jar.

I was on some site somewhere that had suggested links at the bottom, and one of them was for this:

Of course, my immediate reaction was "I want to go to there."

So, I bought all the requisite ingredients to make rainbow cake in a jar.

(I was originally going to be earth mothery--or at least as earth mothery as one who plans to tint white cake within an inch of its life--by making my own cake batter.  But the dough boy was selling himself for only $0.88 per box, so I figure this was worth going full store bought on).

I also got a package of neon food coloring.  When I started mixing, I discovered that between the neons and the regular package of food coloring I already owned, I had all six colors.  This was a little disappointing--I was looking forward to doing some color mixing--but it did streamline the process somewhat.

Three tablespoons of each color gave me three jars of edible sand art.

Once it was baked, I was a little surprised to see that the cake fell a little.  The original recipe claimed I might have to scoop out some cake to make room for the frosting.  No such problem here.

And that's how I ended up eating a tie-dyed shirt in a jar for my Memorial Day dessert.
